Charlie’s remarkable story with Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition (FACC) began in sixth grade, and he was already carrying the weight of past trauma. After being restrained and locked in a classroom in fourth grade, he entered a new school feeling anxious and unsupported.
His Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which allowed for breaks and snacks, was not being followed. Instead of receiving the help he needed, Charlie was often disciplined and was being bullied. That’s when Jefferic, with FACC, stepped in.
Jefferic worked quickly to build a support system around Charlie. He collaborated with school staff to create a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), assembling a team of educators, administrators, and therapists to ensure everyone understood Charlie’s needs. He also coordinated a transition meeting with Charlie’s future middle school teachers, providing them with the tools to support him and the opportunity for Charlie to meet them in advance.
The results were remarkable. Charlie began to feel safe, supported, and understood. He made new friends, earned straight A’s in seventh grade, and started to enjoy going to school.
Today, Charlie is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. His story is a powerful reminder of how Educational Advocacy can change lives.
ARCHS provides funding and strategic support to enhance the work of its funded agencies – including FACC – to improve the lives of the region’s most under-resourced children and families.
