Keith, a 21-year-old, entered the ARCHS’ funded MOKAN pre-apprenticeship program with aspirations of becoming an electrician. His initial experience came from working alongside family members in real estate, where he gained hands-on skills in painting, flooring, and framing windows and closets. This exposure sparked a deeper interest in trades, particularly electrical work. A class visit to the electrical union further solidified his passion and commitment to pursuing a career in the field.
Upon enrolling in MOKAN’s program, Keith faced challenges with time management and struggled with punctuality and attendance. He also initially resisted certain instructions, which put his continuation in the program at risk. However, Keith demonstrated resilience and growth by recognizing the importance of accountability. He made significant adjustments, improved his attendance, and fully embraced the program’s structure.
Keith excelled in both the technical and interpersonal aspects of the training. He emerged as a leader among his peers, completing 4 weeks of hands-on training and 3.5 weeks of life skills development, garnering him 6 specialized certifications.
Keith is currently employed as a laborer, utilizing his forklift certification while awaiting placement in the electrician school program, where he has already passed the entrance exam. His determination and growth throughout MOKAN’s program are a testament to his potential and promise in the trades.
