Mr. Simmons’ journey into the ARCHS’ funded Judicial Circuit Court Program (JCCP) through the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE), reflects his determination to overcome significant challenges in his life. Faced with unemployment, the responsibility of being a caregiver for his critically ill mother, and the needs of his two children, Mr. Simmons was in a difficult position. The support he received from the JCCP and his case manager helped him navigate these challenges.
Upon enrollment in May 2024, Mr. Simmons was introduced to a range of services designed to assist individuals like him in finding stable employment. The JCCP offered tailored support, including career exploration, job readiness training, HiSET classes, and job search assistance. Importantly, Mr. Simmons’s case manager also emphasized the program’s commitment to helping him address any barriers to employment—such as his caregiving responsibilities—by working alongside him every step of the way.
Many employers were unable to offer flexibility. However, Mr. Simmons’s case manager, worked with him to find a position that met his needs. This resulted in a part-time position at Buildingstars Commercial Cleaning Solutions as a maintenance worker, earning $14/hour. His employers were understanding and flexible,
Now, with stable employment, Mr. Simmons can support his children and meet his child support obligations while ensuring that his mother continues to receive the care she needs. The flexibility of his new role provides him with peace of mind. He is grateful for the support from JCCP, which played a key role in helping him regain stability and continue moving forward. Mr. Simmons’s story demonstrates the power of tailored support services that address employment and personal challenges.
